Important Message About Provisions Issues
The Company of Select Marksmen and Indian Department take food very seriously. The foods issued and prepared to soldiers is an ongoing historical project in itself. Significant effort goes into the research, purchasing, and distribution of crown issued provisions. What we attempt to do is eat only period foodstuffs during events and the trek while taking into account health and taste concerns of members. Therefore it is strongly requested of the company to refrain from bringing any foods other than those specified on the Provisions lists. Some foods are issued by the crown while others are up to the individual to provide for themselves.
The general public may take interest in the effort that goes into food preparation. Food was not prepared by women with the army - men cooked their own food, and that is what we do. Our food is very simple, scratch-made recipes based on the staple diets of the British soldier in the 18th century. We have found over the years that this is not for everyone. You certainly have to be the type who enjoys this type of cooking, as you live off of it for a week during the trek or even for a few days at an event. However, almost all who stick with it swear that they have never eaten meals so wholesome and tasty in all their life. As with our forefathers and mothers, we find that "Hunger makes the best sauce."
